Hey Engineering Club!
It’s been an eventful start to the spring calendar, and we’re hoping that we can keep chugging along.
For those of you who were unable to attend either of the last two general meetings, worry not! The officers have worked to ensure proper communication with the members of the Engineering Club, and we’re proud to present a bi-weekly newsletter that summarizes all that’s been happening.
We’ve started off the semester with a change in the Board of Officers: Jon Lachman, a Sophomore Computer Science Major is the new Secretary. We’re all working together to ensure that the transition is as smooth as can be. We are also making sure that the members get enough notice about Engineering Club events by advertising on all of our platforms: Engage, Instagram and Discord. Links to follow these platforms are attached below.
The Engineering Club’s spring 2022 semester is more packed than the Fall, with a wide range of activities planned, from field trips and guest speakers to nitty gritty building projects.
Our first big event is a collaboration with Penn State Abington’s South Asian Student Association (SASA). They are hosting an Indian holiday called Holi, where participants throw colored power at each other among other activities.
We will be co-hosting this event by demonstrating a “light show” using colored powder. Designs for a Pneumatic Powder Dispersal System – which is a fancy way of saying “Air Cannon that shoots Colored Powder” – are already underway and initial budget reports have been submitted to the university for approval. The event is scheduled for March 18, which gives us roughly 4 weeks to finalize the design, construct the PPDS and run tests. We will be hosting weekend build-sessions like we did for the Trebuchet last semester to reach this deadline.
Simultaneously, we are also working to host an RC car tournament, complete with a custom-designed track. We are in the process of finding a suitable location and acquiring the required materials for this event. The final details including the logistics will be discussed in future general meetings.
In other news, the Engineering Club has had to relocate meeting spots and times due to conflicts. OUR GENERAL MEETINGS ARE FROM 12:20PM to 1:20PM on FRIDAYS. We have reserved Woodland 112 (the Big lecture hall) during this time for our meetings. We still plan to use Woodland 135 for our build sessions during the weekends, but not for when we meet during Common Break.
Finally, as perhaps one of the more important things we as a club must participate in, Elections for the 2022-23 Academic Year are approaching. As per our constitution, we are required to host elections toward the end of February and inform the University of the results by early March.
Given that every current officer except Jon is transferring to University Park next semester, it is critical that we find replacements that can take over running the club, and that the current officers can spend time coaching them on how to do their jobs.
Anyone currently in the club is open to run for any position. This is a great opportunity to grow as a leader, learn how to handle and make decisions, and improve inter-personal relationships. If you are interested in any position, fill out this form.
That’s all from us, we’re looking forward to continuing working with the club to promote our general love for engineering and making ridiculous things because it’s fun. Thanks for sticking with us, we appreciate you guys.
In the meantime, if you have any questions, reach out to us at our very own email address: engineering.ab@psu.edu or email Roman personally at rpn5169@psu.edu. You can also follow us on Instagram and Discord.
Cheers!
The Officers,
Engineering Club at Penn State Abington.
